HISA Approved Barrier Free Shower for Herbert

Apr 25, 2025

This bathroom remodel was all about creating a safer, more accessible space without compromising style. The project kicked off with a full demolition, removing the existing shower pan, tub, surround, valve, and glass. To protect the home during this process, a HEPA dust collection system was used to keep the air clean and dust to a minimum.

Once cleared, the bathroom was ready for a fresh start. The team jackhammered through concrete to lower the drain, making way for a true barrier-free shower design. Walls were prepped with moisture-resistant board, and a slip-resistant stone shower pan was installed. A collapsible foam threshold allowed for easy, step-free entry while maintaining water control inside the shower area.

To add a clean, modern finish, white herringbone wall panels were installed around the shower and sealed meticulously. The ceiling was repaired and textured to match the rest of the room, giving the space a cohesive look.

A new valve system was installed, complete with a fixed shower head and a handheld wand, making daily routines more flexible and user-friendly. Multiple grab bars were added throughout the space, both in the shower and next to the toilet, to ensure comfort and stability where it matters most.

To complete the shower, a curved curtain rod with a weighted curtain was added—offering water containment without the need for heavy doors. A sleek corner shelf was also installed to keep bathing essentials within reach.

Finally, an ADA-height toilet with a soft-close lid and an elongated seat was added to finish off the space—functional, comfortable, and in harmony with the overall design.

This remodel balanced thoughtful accessibility features with stylish upgrades, turning a once-standard bathroom into a space that’s safe, elegant, and built to age gracefully with its users.
