HISA Approved Barrier Free Shower for Rafael

Apr 24, 2025

This bathroom remodel was all about creating a space that blends comfort, safety, and functionality—while updating the aesthetic for a crisp, modern look.

The project began with a complete demolition of the existing shower area. The team removed the old tub, surround, valve, and shower pan, carefully hauling away all debris. A HEPA dust collection system was used throughout to minimize dust and maintain a clean environment in the home. Protective coverings were used along walkways and surfaces to ensure the rest of the house remained undisturbed.

Once the space was cleared, the remodel focused on building a barrier-free shower. The team prepped the walls with moisture-resistant greenboard and installed solid backing to support grab bars and a folding shower seat. A slip-resistant composite stone shower pan was installed, complete with a new drain system relocated for optimal performance. A three-wall acrylic surround in a clean white subway tile pattern finished the shower enclosure, with all seams sealed for long-term protection.

A sleek new shower system featuring both a shower head and handheld wand was installed, providing flexible and accessible use. Two metal corner shelves were added in the homeowner’s chosen locations for practical storage, and a folding teak shower seat was securely mounted to the wall with heavy-duty support.

To complete the shower, a custom frameless glass enclosure will be installed once fabrication is complete. In the meantime, a temporary shower curtain can be installed for use. The glass will feature a spot-resistant coating to help maintain a sparkling finish with minimal upkeep.

Beyond the shower, the project also included the installation of an ADA-height toilet, offering improved comfort and accessibility. The toilet features a soft-close lid, elongated seat, and updated plumbing connections to ensure a secure and efficient setup.

Every step of this renovation was approached with attention to detail—from the placement of structural supports to the final clean-up—creating a refreshed, reliable space the homeowner can enjoy for years to come.
