HISA Approved Barrier Free Shower Frederick

Apr 25, 2025

In this recent bathroom transformation, we focused on creating a clean, contemporary, and accessible shower space designed to enhance both function and comfort for daily use.

The project began with a full demolition of the existing shower surround, valve, and glass enclosure. Our team carefully removed all debris, preparing the area for a completely fresh start. To allow for a more open and usable space, we also removed the right-side pop-out, maximizing the shower’s width.

A custom barrier-free acrylic shower system was installed, featuring a center-drain composite pan measuring either 56.25″ x 47″ or 60″ x 40″, depending on the final space dimensions after demo. We prepped the walls with moisture-resistant green board and installed solid-surface travertine acrylic panels all the way to the ceiling. All joints were sealed using color-matched silicone to ensure a clean, watertight finish. To keep things tidy around the edges, we also caulked in along the ceiling line.

The shower upgrade included a new Moen Adler Posi-Temp valve in polished chrome, complete with a new shower head and handheld wand on a slide bar for convenience. We added a sleek Moen 24″ ADA-compliant grab bar in polished chrome, and at the homeowner’s request, we installed additional grab bars at preferred locations, ensuring safety without sacrificing style.

Inside the shower, we installed a large tower caddy to match the acrylic walls and provide ample storage for bath products. We also added a large shower niche (or optional corner shelves), and fitted the space with a stylish folding shower seat in brushed nickel for a spa-like experience with built-in comfort.

To enhance accessibility in the toilet area, we installed a fold-down grab bar with a stabilizing leg, placed precisely where the homeowner needed it. Additionally, a collapsible water dam was added along the shower threshold, paired with a shower curtain and rod, and we included a clip to secure the curtain on the wet wall—an ideal touch to keep water contained and cleanup simple.

Our finishing touches included installing new drywall where needed for the acrylic wall panels, as well as backing for grab bars to ensure secure mounting. We also updated the bathroom lighting with new LED can light inserts, and even installed a new shower head in a secondary bathroom for added convenience.

This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful design, accessibility features, and modern finishes can come together to completely reimagine a bathroom. From demolition to the final seal, our team ensured every detail was addressed with care, functionality, and style.
